VAGALA or TAMPULMA, Northern Ghana Rare circular mask adorned with an openwork crest, centered on two linear motifs delimited by a long column. It is adorned with incised geometric decoration. Wood, natural pigment, plant fibers, old marks of use This type of mask with a disk-shaped crest is characteristic of styles from northern Ghana, related to the Bwa and Gurunsi groups of Burkina Faso. It features a frontal disk adorned with a vertical superstructure, in this case openwork, and a bird's beak nose. These masks are distinguished by their inverted U-shaped back, typical of masks from the sigma group, linked to the cult of the blacksmith Hombo, a major spiritual figure in several Bwa villages.
