Nicolas BERTIN (b. Paris 1667-1736) - Lot 238
Nicolas BERTIN (b. Paris 1667-1736) Bacchus Red chalk drawing. Height 35.2 cm. Width: 19 cm. Provenance: Prague, Adalbert von Lanna (1836-1904), his collection mark on verso b. l. Lugt 2773, Vienna, private collection. 16th century molded and gilded wood frame. Note: Bacchus is in a way the archetype that Nicolas Bertin lent to his male figures, whether Adam, Anacreon or Apollo. This same elegance, with its elongated canons, can be seen in most of his paintings, including the one in the Musée des Beaux-arts de Saint-Étienne, for which our study may provide an initial idea. The provenance of this unpublished sheet - and the only sanguine known to date by Nicolas Bertin - seems to confirm the taste of German art lovers of the early 16th century for his works.
