FLANDERS - 17th century. - Lot 142
FLANDERS - 17th century. Rare antependium bearing the arms of Cardinal Innico CARRACCIOLO, seniore (1607 - 1685) Large polychrome leather panel, formerly gilded and silvered, with rich embossed and repoussé decoration of cartouches and lambrequins and the cardinal's coat of arms in frames of garlands of fruit and flowers. Produced by a Flemish workshop for Italy, probably between 1666 and 1667. As seen Height 90.5 Long. 256 cm With frame Height 104 Long. 269 cm Biography : Innico CARACCIOLO (1607-1685) came from one of Italy's greatest princely families, and in particular from the Neapolitan region that gave the Kingdom of Naples, Italy and the Church numerous religious, political and military figures. He held a number of positions in the Roman Curia, including apostolic prothonotary, referendary to the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, cleric, auditor and dean of the Apostolic Chamber and apostolic legate in Ferrara. He was created cardinal by Pope Alexander VII at the consistory of February 15, 1666. His creation was published on March 7, 1667, and he was elected Archbishop of Naples the same year. Note: While this production of embossed leather is commonly referred to as "Cordovan leather", the Cordovan sheath-makers were forced to cease production in 1610, following a decree by King Philip III of Spain. The Spanish-influenced southern Netherlands, particularly around the center of Mechelen, quickly reproduced these decorations for woodwork, wall hangings, hotel fronts and seats... Although Italy, Germany and northern France also reproduced this technique, the flowers and fruit on our panel are typical of the Flemish type in the second half of the 17th century. Bibliography: Études Héraultaises N°36 - 2006 review We would like to thank Mathieu Chaine for his help in identifying the coat of arms.
