Attributed to David de CONINCK (Antwerp 1643 - 1705 Brussels - Lot 52
Attributed to David de CONINCK (Antwerp 1643 - 1705 Brussels), White hen, her rooster and chicks, guinea pigs, in a landscape. Oil on canvas. On the back, on the stretcher, stencil mark in black ink, probably corresponding to a Christie's sale, mid-20th century: 950HX. Height 100 cm. Width: 125 cm. Repainting probably carried out in the first half of the 20th century. Minor damage to upper left corner. Small dent to upper left corner. Minor damage to lower left corner, scattered restorations. A painter of animal still lifes with an international career that spanned the courts of Brussels, Paris, Venice, Munich, Vienna and Rome, Coninck was particularly fond of composing with gallinaceous birds posing alongside rodentians. Our composition can be compared with "Rooster, turkey, parrot, rabbits and guinea pigs", conserved in Poznan (Muzeum Narodowe, inv. 55, oil on canvas, 95 x 130 cm.) or "Rooster, turkey, peacock and rabbits", conserved in Genoa (Palazzo Reale, inv. 1204, oil on canvas, 122 x 168 cm.).
