Hanns JORIN (1888–1961) - Lot 67
Hanns JORIN (1888–1961) Portrait of the pianist Gisèle Couteau Bronze bust with medal patina Signed “Jörin” and “1933” on the right shoulder Bears the foundry stamp “CIRE PERDUE / C.VALSUANI” and is numbered 1/3 Height: 45 cm Width: 35 cm Depth: 20 cm Signs of wear on the patina Provenance: The model’s family, then passed down through the family. Note: Gisèle Couteau, a French pianist active in the 1930s, was part of the French piano and music scene between the two world wars. She performed notably on Radio-Paris in 1935 in a program dedicated to Bach-Busoni, Nin-Culmell, and Ravel. She was also involved in Parisian contemporary music circles: she participated in activities related to La Jeune France and the 1937 Auditions du Mardi, alongside flutist Jan Merry, among others. IRCAM also notes that a performance of André Jolivet’s *Cinq Incantations* by Jan Merry may have taken place at her home in January 1937. The Yvonne Lefébure Collection at the Mahler Music Library preserves correspondence addressed to or related to Gisèle Couteau, attesting to her connection with the great French pedagogue. According to biographical information that has yet to be corroborated by a primary source, rheumatic problems may have led her to gradually abandon her career as a concert pianist to devote herself to teaching. Her career path is particularly interesting from the perspective of the transmission of the French school of piano, as she was reportedly a student of Alfred Cortot and an assistant to Yvonne Lefébure, who was herself a student and collaborator of Cortot.
