MUMUYE, Nigeria - Lot 356
MUMUYE, Nigeria
Statue with a laterally compressed head.
Wood with an aged honey- and brown-colored patina; remnants of white pigment. Signs of wear; erosion on the feet.
Height: 71 cm
Width: 19.5 cm
Note: This figure is distinguished by a particularly bold sculptural composition: the slender, powerfully articulated body rises to a head that is strongly compressed laterally—almost reduced to a single plane—and brought to life by the large lateral discs. This pursuit of abstraction and controlled imbalance is fully in keeping with the Mumuye artistic language and lends this work a strong sculptural uniqueness.
