MATHIEU MATÉGOT (1910-2001) - Lot 317
MATHIEU MATÉGOT (1910-2001) "Model (medium format) most likely designed for the artist's decoration of the attic of Dr. Claoué's duplex apartment, Paris, 1961". Pair of medium-format wall lights, recessed and with one part projecting. The brass cages; the rounded bottoms at the top, the side cheeks with a small lower part protruding from the wall. Glass fronts with brass frames and tabs forming sockets. The interiors are each fitted with an original white-lacquered brass semi-cylindrical reflector for electric lighting. H. 40 cm - W. 21 cm - D. 15 cm Condition of use, traces of lacquer on the reflectors, significant oxidation on the brass. Provenance and history : Succession Claoué, Paris. In 1956, Mathieu Matégot decorated Dr. Claoué's clinic with furniture made, in part, of lacquered or perforated metal. Included in this ensemble was a large desk with a base sheathed in black saddle-stitched leather and a large clear glass slab top. In 1961, five years after the construction of his clinic, Dr Claoué naturally commissioned the decorator to arrange and decorate the attic rooms above his Paris apartment, where our pair of wall lights were installed. Bibliography : Patrick Favardin - Mathieu Matégot - Éditions Galerie Matthieu Richard & Éditions Norma, Paris, 2014. A large-format sconce of the same design as our fixtures, in situ in the attic, featured in a color archival photograph reproduced on page 284. Expert : Emmanuel Eyraud
