ZOULOU, South Africa Set of two pipes with stylized, refined - Lot 450
ZOULOU, South Africa Set of two pipes with stylized, refined and balanced forms. One of them, with a pipe covered with a mosaic of small multicolored beads, is accompanied by a long woven tie, made of seeds and very small trade beads, enabling it to be carried across the shoulder. Hardwood, old honey and brown patina, wear marks H. 37-21 cm. Among the Zulu, pipes are not only utilitarian objects, but also status markers. Embellished with pearls and worn over the shoulder, they displayed the owner's prestige and often accompanied ceremonial or festive occasions. Bibliography: Christie's, The Trevor Barton Collection of Unusual Smoking Pipes, London, 2011, lot 649, for similar examples.
