LATE ROMAN ERA, Mediterranean Basin, IVᵉ - Vᵉ century A.D. - Lot 27
LATE ROMAN ERA, Mediterranean Basin, IVᵉ - Vᵉ century A.D. Small vase with a moving handle, decorated on the body with three engraved medallions. These feature a stylized cross, whose ends are marked by two circles, and a deer, figures surrounded by a geometric frieze. Blown glass, weathered, with a subtle iridescent patina. H. 13.8 cm x L. 6.5 cm Provenance : Collection of Professor Kenneth Graham. This finely decorated vase belongs to the late Roman Empire, marked by the spread of Christianity and its integration into art and everyday objects. The engraved Byzantine cross, with two circles at either end, reflects the transition to Christian iconography, evoking the universality of faith and the divine link with the cosmic order. Deer, often found in early Christian art, symbolize the soul seeking divine grace. Probably used for oils or liturgical substances, this vase bears witness to a refined aesthetic combined with strong symbolic significance. Expert : Serge REYNES
