YORUBA, Nigeria - Lot 412
YORUBA, Nigeria Oshe Shango with a figure mastering a snake wood, old brown patina, remnant of white pigment 39 × 12 cm Note: The Yoruba people settled in southwestern Nigeria and developed a religious system structured around deities, including Shango, god of thunder and lightning. Shango oshé are ritual sticks held by priests and followers during ceremonies dedicated to this divinity. They are used to invoke and manifest Shango's power through dance and gesture. The sculpted figure, here mastering a snake, reinforces the idea of control over forces and spiritual authority, in line with the power attributed to Shango in the Yoruba pantheon.
