YOSHITOMO NARA (born 1959) - Lot 347
YOSHITOMO NARA (born 1959) “Real One, 2020” Offset lithographic poster printed in color on vellum. Stamped “Dallas Contemporary © Yoshitomo Nara.” Published by Dallas Contemporary, Texas Height: 38 cm Width: 43 cm Provenance: - Dallas Contemporary Museum of Art, Dallas, Texas, USA. Yoshitomo Nara emerged in the 1990s as a major figure in Japanese contemporary art. Trained at Aichi University of the Arts and later at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, he is influenced by popular culture, punk and rock music, as well as imagery from childhood. His paintings, drawings, and sculptures feature childlike figures with ambiguous expressions, oscillating between innocence, loneliness, and rebellion. His minimalist style, drawing on references to both Japanese and Western culture, gives rise to a body of work that is both intimate and universal. Close to the independent Japanese art movements of the 1990s, Nara has thus developed an instantly recognizable aesthetic at the intersection of contemporary art, illustration, and popular culture.
