SAYPE (born in 1989) - Lot 338
SAYPE (born in 1989) “Beyond Walls, Step 1: Paris” (Eco-friendly paint on grass—15,000 m²—Paris (FR) 2019—48°51'25.4"N 2°17'47.0"E) Photo and objects from the ephemeral artwork. Frame dimensions: Height: 148 cm Width: 149 cm Photograph dimensions: Height: 80 cm; 29.5 cm Width: 120 cm; 41.5 cm Note: Born in Belfort in 1989, Guillaume Legros, known as Saype, is a self-taught artist who began doing graffiti as a teenager. After training and working as a nurse, he simultaneously developed a personal artistic practice, inspired by street art, graffiti, and reflections on human, philosophical, and environmental issues. Starting in 2013, Saype gained recognition for his gigantic murals created directly in nature—on grass, dirt, sand, or snow—using a biodegradable paint he developed himself. At the intersection of street art and land art, his work plays with monumental scale, the relationship to the landscape, and the ephemeral nature of the artwork. His project “Beyond Walls,” launched in Paris in 2019, is one of the central themes of his artistic practice: depicting figures and hands reaching out to one another across different territories, it explores the concepts of solidarity, openness, and the bonds between individuals. The title, “Beyond Walls,” evokes both geographical borders and the barriers between individuals. Each mural thus forms part of a global artwork that gradually connects different territories. As the first stage of the global art project Beyond Walls, this work—created on the lawns of the Champ-de-Mars—marks the beginning of a vast human chain envisioned across cities and countries. His installations, designed to gradually fade away, thus combine human commitment, technical innovation, and environmental awareness.
