Ger LATASTER (1920–2012) - Lot 317
Ger LATASTER (1920–2012) Untitled. Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. Numbered “63” on the back. Height: 200 cm Width: 220 cm Provenance: Paul Facchetti Gallery. Ger Lataster was a leading Dutch painter of postwar abstraction. Born in Schaesberg in 1920, he studied at the School of Applied Arts in Maastricht and later at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. He made a name for himself in the 1950s with his abstract expressionist paintings, characterized by intense color, free gestural brushwork, and a bold treatment of the medium. Although often associated with lyrical abstraction and the CoBrA movement, Lataster nevertheless maintained a personal and independent artistic approach. His work evolved over the decades, shifting from highly gestural abstract compositions to works that gradually incorporated geometric forms, objects, and figurative elements. His work is included in numerous international museum collections, notably at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and he has also participated in major events such as Documenta. In 2010, he was named a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion.
