Angelo MANGIAROTTI (1921–2012) - Lot 288
Angelo MANGIAROTTI (1921–2012) Coffee table with a quadrangular top in black Portor marble resting on four nested cylindrical legs in veined gray marble. Up and Up Editions, circa 1970–1980. Height: 27 cm Width: 100 cm Scratches on the top and minor wear. A Milanese architect and designer, Angelo Mangiarotti was a leading figure in postwar Italian design. A graduate of the Politecnico di Milano, he spent time in the United States in the 1950s, where he met Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius, and Mies van der Rohe, among others, before collaborating with Bruno Morassutti. His work is rooted in an exploration of materials, structure, and formal simplicity. Marble, stone, and wood are worked according to principles of interlocking and gravity, giving rise to furniture that is both sculptural and functional. His collaborations with Cassina, Artemide, Knoll, and Danese have helped establish his work as a benchmark of 20th-century Italian design.
