Jean COCTEAU (1889-1963) - Lot 187
Jean COCTEAU (1889-1963) Autograph letter signed on blue paper addressed to Mme Poisson, owner of a hotel on rue de Rivoli, dated May 30, 1938. "Dear Madame, I would have arranged things a long time ago if Mr. Laulaumier, your manager, hadn't made scandals in my house that I'm not used to and that are unlike neither you nor Mr. Poisson. I left the hotel because of Mr. Laulaumier, whose attitude and words were not the same in my presence as in my absence. Mr. Laulaumier doesn't want to get along with Mr. Muller and doesn't want to acknowledge his arrangement accepted, by you, he tells me, with your customary kindness and good grace. I shall be delighted to see you, and to speak in a style that I believe should never be abandoned. You and Mr. Poisson have often told me how happy you are to have me at the hotel, and I think I've always been a decent customer. Unfortunately, things are happening behind you that make the hotel uninhabitable for many people, and I'm not the only one to complain and ask you, as I would friends, to put your manager in order and teach him how to behave with your old clientele. Mr. L.'s tone could, moreover, get you into a lot of trouble, if it weren't directed at people who don't want to complain and who know that you're ignoring an unspeakable way of being. Tell Mr. Muller how you would like me to divide my debt, for you are well placed to know that the slightest change entails heavy burdens and, alas, sometimes obliges courteous agreements. Your friendly and respectful Jean Cocteau. P.S. Forgive me, but it was my duty to warn you, as you could lose people without realizing why'.
