Huguette BERTRAND (1922–2005) - Lot 158
Huguette BERTRAND (1922–2005) Untitled. Gouache, ink, and pastel on paper. Signed lower left. Height: 71 cm Width: 91 cm Provenance: GALARTE Gallery, 13 rue Mazarine, 75006 Paris – 1992. Huguette Arthur Bertrand moved to Paris in 1945 and attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. At the heart of the new École de Paris, she rubbed shoulders with Jean Dewasne, Jean Deyrolle, Serge Poliakoff, Martin Barré, and later Pierre Soulages, Hans Hartung, Zao Wou-Ki, and Gérard Schneider in the circle of art critic Michel Ragon. After early works influenced by geometric abstraction, she developed a freer, more gestural style of painting based on masses of color, line, and texture. Her work evolved toward a lyrical abstraction characterized by fluid, ethereal forms, which earned her the Fénéon Prize in 1955.
