Francis SMITH (1881–1961) - Lot 120
Francis SMITH (1881–1961) Illustrated letter to Armand. Ink and watercolor on paper. Signed. Height: 26 cm (visible portion) Length: 20 cm (visible portion) Francis Smith, born Francisco Smith in Lisbon in 1881, was a Portuguese painter who became a naturalized French citizen and settled in Paris in 1907. Close to the Portuguese artistic community in the capital, he associated notably with Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso and Eduardo Viana, and beginning in 1911 participated in the first major gatherings of Portuguese modernism. His work, deeply marked by nostalgia for his native country, is dominated by views of Lisbon—its working-class neighborhoods, stairways, gardens, and street scenes. His paintings, executed in a deliberately poetic and simplified style, are characterized by a peaceful atmosphere, soft light, and a delicate color palette. A unique figure in the School of Paris, Francis Smith is today represented notably at the Centre Pompidou and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
