IACOVLEFF (Alexandre). Drawings and Paintings from Africa Created During the Citroën Central Africa Expedition. Second HAARDT AUDOUIN-DUBREUIL Mission. Paris: Jules Meynial, n.d. [1927]. Folio volume of (15) bound folios and 49 loose plates in a publisher’s full Marrakech filali cloth slipcase with flaps, author and title stamped on the front cover, leather laces, crafted by Félix. First edition published under the direction of Lucien Vogel, featuring notes and travel drawings by Alexandre IACOVLEFF, official painter of the Citroën Central Africa Expedition, corresponding to the second Haardt, Audouin-Dubreuil, illustrated with numerous in-text sketches and 49 color plates, numbered 1 through 50, including one double plate (numbered 1–2). The engraving and printing of the plates and drawings were carried out by Godde Chevassus, as were the trichromes, printed on the presses at Studium. The text was set using the “Sphinx” typeface by Deberny Peignot. Limited edition of 1,020 numbered copies; this copy, No. 108, was printed for Arturo Lopez Willshaw, with the text on Madagascar paper from the Lafuma-Navarre paper mills and the plates on pure rag vellum from the Lafuma-Navarre paper mills. The text is bound in a soft, light brown half-suede cover, with black satin covers featuring African-inspired decorations painted in red and black. Notes: The “Citroën Central Africa Expedition” (October 28, 1924 – June 26, 1925), also known as the “Croisière Noire,” was the first expedition of its time whose objectives—clearly defined by the French government—went beyond sporting and commercial achievements to take on humanitarian, scientific, and cultural dimensions.
