Joseph RIVIÈRE (1912–1961) - Lot 53
Joseph RIVIÈRE (1912–1961) “Standing Female Nude” Glazed plaster sculpture. Signed “J. RIVIERE” on the pedestal. Height: 59 cm Joseph Rivière was a French figurative sculptor, born in Tours in 1912 and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux under Charles Malric and François-Maurice Roganeau. His body of work focused primarily on the human figure, nudes, and portraits, executed in a restrained yet expressive style that drew on the tradition of 20th-century French figurative sculpture. Active first in Bordeaux and later in Paris, he exhibited regularly at art salons and taught, notably, at the Académie Julian. His body of work also includes several monumental commissions and commemorative monuments. The Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris holds several of his bronzes, including *Baigneuse* (circa 1950), *Prière* (circa 1955), and *Arica* (1959), which attest to the importance he placed on the figure and modeling in his work.
