Based on a design by Jean BOUCAULT (admitted to the Guild on - Lot 547
Based on a design by Jean BOUCAULT (admitted to the Guild on April 8, 1728) for the Baron de Breteuil. Pair of armchairs with flat, curved backs made of molded, carved, and gilded wood, decorated with a frieze of acanthus leaves accented by a row of pearls. The tapered legs feature twisted fluting and are adorned with foliage at the base. Louis XVI style. Height: 90 cm Width: 45 cm Depth: 57.5 cm Some gilding is missing. Note: Our pair of armchairs is modeled after the chairs crafted by the cabinetmaker Jean Boucault (who became a master in 1728) and delivered by the king’s official upholsterer, Claude-François Capin in 1783, for the Baron de Breteuil at the Palace of Versailles. The set included “a lampas ensemble consisting of a tapestry with a border, a large ‘confident’ sofa, a checkered ‘tête-à-tête,’ two ‘queen-style’ wingback chairs, six armchairs, four chairs, and four eight-panel lampas curtains” (Arch. nat., O1 3534). Two chairs from this set are held at the J. P. Getty Museum, Los Angeles (inv. 71.DA.92), another at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City (inv. 32-191/10), and a pair of bergères was sold at Christie’s, Paris, on September 10, 2018, lot 71 (Juan de Beistegui collection).
