PARIS, circa 1745–1749. - Lot 510
PARIS, circa 1745–1749.
A chest of drawers with a slightly undulating front, made of rosewood and violetwood veneer and decorated with a latticework marquetry pattern within panels.
It features three drawers in two rows without dividers on the front and rests on four slightly curved legs.
Beautiful ornamentation of chiseled and gilded bronze, hallmarked with a crowned “C,” including drawer pulls, lock plates, lamp bases, and uprights extended in a beaded frieze down to the ram’s-hoof feet.
The top is made of veined gray breccia marble, molded in a “beak of corbin” style.
Louis XV period.
Height: 83 cm
Width: 113 cm
Depth: 53 cm
Marble restoration, signs of wear.
Note:
In 1745, an edict by Louis XV required all bronze casters to mark their works with a crowned “C.”
Used between 1748 and 1749, this tax mark—intended to finance the Wars of the Austrian Succession—allows us to date our chest of drawers with precision.
