KANAK, New Caledonia - Lot 367
KANAK, New Caledonia
Ceremonial axe with a fish-shaped blade.
Carved and polished nephrite, hardwood with an antique reddish patina and signs of wear, coconut fibers, and red fabric.
Height: 47.5 cm
Width: 7.5 cm
Note: Nephrite was among the precious materials of ancient Kanak society. Green stone blades were prestige items, likely circulated through exchange networks between chiefdoms or preserved and passed down as part of their wealth. While isolated blades are relatively common in collections, complete ancient examples, such as this one, are rarer.
