MALEKULA ISLAND, Vanuatu, Melanesia - Lot 365
MALEKULA ISLAND, Vanuatu, Melanesia Témès Nevimbur puppet head, with protruding nose and eyes Earthen mixtures, pig teeth, plant fibers, giant spiderweb, natural pigments, aged patina, and signs of wear. H: 20 cm L: 21 cm D: 20 cm Note: The Témès Nevimbur were ceremonial puppets associated with Malekula’s men’s societies and initiation rituals. Their composite technique—earthy materials, plant fibers, spiderwebs, pigments, and pig’s teeth—is characteristic of these creations. The bird-like representation of this specimen, rarely seen on Témès heads, constitutes a remarkable iconographic feature.
