BWA, Burkina Faso - Lot 361
BWA, Burkina Faso Hybrid wolf-and-buffalo mask. Wood covered with natural red, white, and brown ochre pigments. Signs of wear. Height: 82 cm Length: 33 cm Note: This mask combines several zoomorphic features in a symbolic composition: the large horns curving in a circle evoke the buffalo, while the strongly protruding muzzle resembles that of a canid. The large concentric eyes, accentuated by a raised pupil, evoke a nocturnal bird, such as an owl. This superimposition of animal features is part of the visual language of Bwa masks.
