BAOULÉ, Ivory Coast - Lot 359

BAOULÉ, Ivory Coast Male figure with pronounced joints, hands with fingers spread out, resting symbolically on the upper abdomen Hardwood, original brown and honey-colored lacquered patina, glossy in places. Height: 44 cm Length: 9 cm Note: The figure adopts a hieratic posture characteristic of Baoulé statuary: hands drawn back to the abdomen, a scarified body, and a carefully arranged trilobed headdress. The broad, spatula-shaped feet resting on a circular base accentuate the stability and frontal orientation of the piece. The headdress, scarifications, and idealized beauty all contribute to the expression of status and the qualities sought after in Baoulé human representation.
