Baron GERARD dit "François Gérard" (1770-1837) - Lot 210
Baron GERARD dit "François Gérard" (1770-1837) Pâris Oil on paper mounted on canvas on its original stretcher. Height Height : 47 cm Width : 39 cm Provenance France, private collection Gilded wood frame 19th century Note : Unpublished study most likely begun by Baron Gérard as early as 1804. According to his biographers, he had begun a composition illustrating the Judgment of Pâris in 1804, which he continued until 1812. This study on paper may well have been preparatory to the painting, which he eventually destroyed, dissatisfied with the result, and of which only various drawings* have survived, two supposed fragments sold at Artcurial in November 2014 and a sketch on cardboard for the composition, which confirmed the attribution. The fragment on canvas depicting Pâris is similar in size and appearance to our oil on paper. - Louvre, RF 35623, New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art, inv. 2021.375.2. - Paris-London David Jones Gallery, sketch for composition, oil on board.
