Francesco VANNI (1563-1610) Saint-Gérôme in meditation Black stone and red chalk Height 21.5 cm Width: 17.9 cm The verso shows a later sketch of a young boy, scratched in black stone, in a handsome 17th-century carved and gilded wood frame. Provenance Earl of Warwick, ( 1818-1893), his collection mark lower right Lugt.2600, London, his estate sale Sotheby June 22 and 23, 1916 France, part.. Exhibition London, Grosvenor Gallery, 1877-1878. Note : Preparatory for Agostino Carracci's etching, produced between 1595 and 1596, our drawing should also be considered in relation to the painting that Francesco Vanni was to deliver around 1590, still preserved at the fattoria dell'Amorosa in Sinalunga (Siena) and one of the rare drawings in black stone and red chalk whose precise, refined execution made it destined to be kept by its commissioner. Considered lost or unlocated by D. de Grazia in 1979, this unpublished drawing adds an essential element to Francesco Vanni's corpus of drawings and bears witness to his exceptional talents as a draughtsman.
