BAGARRA, Sudan. - Lot 271
BAGARRA, Sudan. Female figure representing a standing young woman, her round belly indicating pregnancy. She wears a skirt made of bamboo and cut-metal pendants, embellished with blue beads, as well as a large tiered necklace. The face, with its gentle expression, is topped by a woollen headdress. Wood, bamboo, metal, beads, wear marks. Dimensions: 38 × 12.5 cm These female dolls, from the Baggara of the Omdurman region, are known for their rich ornamentation of beads, buttons and metal parts. They were entrusted to young girls, who dressed and adorned them like symbolic doubles. More than a simple toy, they accompanied growth and embodied the ideal of fertility and femininity, sometimes being kept until marriage as personal emblems.
