LOSSO, Togo. - Lot 245
LOSSO, Togo.
Pair of sculptures featuring standing figures, standing on powerful legs with angular joints. The belly, treated in high relief, evokes a principle of fertility or fecundity. The heads end in a plateau, the nose is rectangular, the cheeks adorned with two incised scarifications. The arms are atrophied, the chest marked. The whole is characterized by a deliberately geometrical style and strong formal tension.
Hardwood, old glossy brown patina.
Height 29.5 and 30 cm
The sculpture of the Losso, a small group based in northern Togo, is characterized by a high degree of stylization and a deliberately abstract construction of volumes. The figures emphasize visual and symbolic impact rather than naturalistic likeness, with fragmented bodies, accentuated proportions and angular forms. Straddling the border between figuration and abstraction, these sculptures reflect a synthetic conception of the human body, in which vital force and fecundity take precedence over individualization.
