POUNOU, Gabon. Dance mask featuring an intensely expressive face, accentuated by a closed mouth and half-closed eyes. The center of the forehead is adorned with a tiered scarification in relief. The headdress is arranged around a central lobe with a sagittal crest and cascading side braids. Wood, remains of white pigment (probably kaolin), patina and wear marks. Height Height : 25 cm Length: 17 cm Note: Pounou masks are distinguished by their elaborate headdresses and stylized faces. They are used in cult ceremonies, where they express identity, status and the transmission of ritual knowledge.
