LEGA, Democratic Republic of the Congo. - Lot 142
LEGA, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Grade mask featuring a face inscribed in a heart-shaped space, the eyes sculpted in relief and the mouth with lips decorated with cross-hatching, indicating an important grade within the initiatory society.
Wood, remains of kaolin, vegetable fibers, old patina, marks of use.
Dimensions: 16 × 10 cm (without beard)
This small mask is part of the Lega tradition of miniature masks used in the Bwami society. They accompanied the initiate throughout his progress, serving as a reminder of the rules of conduct and embodying moral values. The hatched mouth emphasizes the mastery of speech, essential for high-grade initiates. This symbolism echoes the Lega proverbs that "the mouth can build or destroy", or "a man's wisdom is measured by his words". Thus, this mask was not only a badge of rank, but also a support for ethical reflection and oral transmission.
