DOGON, cliff region, Mali. - Lot 112
DOGON, cliff region, Mali. Anthropomorphic figure representing a stylized standing figure, with angular features, resting on a stepped pedestal. One of his arms is raised to the sky in a symbolic gesture. The uncluttered face has an interiorized expression. Hardwood, old brown crusty patina. Height 24 cm Length : 6 cm Note: In Dogon statuary, the raised arm refers to rites of intercession addressed to the celestial powers, notably to call down rain. The protrusion, likened to a third arm, underlines this propitiatory function, linking fertility, cosmos and community order.
