Southern MEXICO, probably VERACRUZ, mid-20th century - Lot 96
Southern MEXICO, probably VERACRUZ, mid-20th century
Dance mask featuring a youthful face with wide-open, watchful eyes. The features are balanced and frontal, with a closed mouth giving the expression a careful restraint. The headdress is marked in relief and structures the upper part of the face. The ears, carved separately and then added, contribute to the formal legibility of the whole and reinforce the mask's expressive character.
Polychrome wood, old patina, wear marks, a few paint chips on the surface.
Dance masks from southern Mexico are part of a vast corpus of festive and ritual practices still alive in the 20th century, associated with community celebrations of colonial origin. Behind these Christian or popular frameworks lie forms, attitudes and gestures inherited from pre-Columbian traditions, where the mask remains an essential vector of symbolic transformation and collective identity.
