Element of a poncho with staircase decoration.
Camelid threads, fragility
Provenance: Collection of Professor Kenneth Graham
The Chimú, who settled on the north coast of Peru, prospered between 900 and 1470 before becoming part of the Inca Empire. Their capital, Chan Chan, is famous for its sophisticated urban planning and large adobe buildings.
Textiles such as this poncho bear witness to their technical skill and the importance of weaving in their culture.
