MENTAWAI, Mentawai Islands, Indonesia - Lot 90
MENTAWAI, Mentawai Islands, Indonesia A paddle with a long, slender shaft ending at the upper end in an outgrowth carved in the shape of an arc, evoking stylized buffalo horns. The elongated, tapered blade adopts a foliate profile, gradually widening before narrowing towards the lower tip. The balance of proportions between the finesse of the handle and the solid surface of the blade lends the ensemble a sober elegance and a strong sculptural presence. Wood, old honey patina, wear marks.
