JAVA, Indonesia. Barong ceremonial mask Hand-held mask featuring the head of a divinity with feline features, powerful snout, bulging eyes and open mouth. The back of the mask is designed to be worn with a textile covering the dancer's body. Polychrome wood, marks of use, small chips. Dimensions: 23 × 28 cm The Barong belongs to the ritual theater where protective forces and threatening powers confront each other; the head, expressive and frontal, condenses the energy of the character at the heart of the dance. Handholding and wear attest to effective use, with polychromy reinforcing the divinity's "living" presence during ceremonies.
