In the Massim area, canoe prows were carved with subtle motifs - stylized waves, scrolls and interlocking animal figures - that embodied both aesthetics and a cosmological vision. This type of ornamentation was featured in particular on boats engaged in the Kula, a vast ceremonial circuit of inter-island exchanges, where the beauty of the vessel played a strategic role: the patterns, colors and spiral shapes were intended to make a visual impression on the exchange partners, encouraging them to be more generous in their transactions.
These ornaments also had magical virtues: they were supposed to protect the sailors and confer speed, agility and solidity on the pirogue. Each symbolic element - seabird, snake, spiral, anthropomorphic figures - referred to natural or mythical forces that guaranteed safe and successful navigation.
Certain types of Massim canoe, such as the masawa used in the Kula, were the object of important construction and launching ceremonies, underlining the hybridity between utilitarian function, ritual and sacred aesthetics.
