KANAK (Curios), New Caledonia, mid-20th century - Lot 72
KANAK (Curios), New Caledonia, mid-20th century This arrowhead features the bust of an ancestor with a deliberately rounded body, evoking the idea of abundance and fecundity for the entire clan. The face is structured by oversized eyes with a double gaze, conveying constant vigilance. The crescent-shaped beard frames a discreet mouth. The head is topped by a complex, multi-layered headdress, the upper part of which features a sawtooth motif and a five-tooth comb, giving the whole a strong, symbolic verticality. 74 x 13 cm Wood eroded by time and weathering. Kanak feast arrows traditionally crowned the tops of large huts, affirming the prestige of the chiefs and the symbolic presence of the clan's protective ancestors. This example continues this formal and symbolic tradition, while at the same time belonging to the so-called Curios production, intended for exchanges with foreigners passing through in the 20th century.
