Kachina doll representing Hemis, the major ceremonial spirit of Hopi Niman dances. The turquoise mask, adorned with large round eyes, black and red zigzag motifs and vertical painted feathers, forms a distinctive semi-circular headdress. The doll wears a cape decorated with painted geometric motifs and a white ceremonial dress enhanced by a black and red belt. The colors are vivid and the details precisely painted.
Carved and painted wood, fabric, feathers and various materials.
Circa 1950-1980.
Hemis is a spirit invoked at the end of the summer ceremonial cycle, bringing blessings and prayers for rain. He is at the center of Niman dances, which mark the end of the Kachinas' presence in Hopi villages. His semi-circular feather crown is one of his most recognizable attributes.
