This type of mask, often worn during ceremonial dances, plays a central role in initiation rites and celebrations. Its austere form and minimalist design evoke both a mystical presence and spiritual authority.
The high crest with two flat horns, a symbol of power and fertility, reflects the interconnection between natural and spiritual forces in Mossi culture. These masks, often associated with protective ancestors, are carved to embody guardian spirits, watching over the community and ensuring the continuity of traditions.
This remarkable specimen, with its imposing size and distinctive features, illustrates the skill of Mossi sculptors and the depth of their art.
