Sirigé mask sculpted with a cubist face, rectangular forehead, ears ending in antelope horns. The face is delimited by a median ridge and surmounted by a high vertical crest rising from a diamond-shaped base, structured in superimposed registers evoking stylized temple columns.
Wood, natural red, white and brown pigments, cords. Some erosion, marks of use and age.
Height Height : 132 cm
Provenance: Mark Eglinton, New York (#4898); ex-collection Stuart Warkow, New York; ex-collection Alfred Scheinberg, New York, acquired 1978.
Note: This Sirigé mask was used during Dama ceremonies, celebrating the memory of the elders. Its monumentality and codified vertical structure embody the symbolic links between the celestial and terrestrial worlds in Dogon thought.
