Bashilele masks, rarely preserved, play an essential role in the social and ceremonial rites of this community. Sculpted with great care and imbued with complex symbolisms, these masks were used to embody authority figures or protective spirits during ritual dances.
The hand carved on the chin is a powerful motif, evoking the strength, control and sovereignty of the clan chief. This detail testifies to the importance accorded to the role of leaders in Bashilele society, where masks are also objects of collective memory. This ancient specimen, marked by use, reflects the artistic mastery of Bashilele sculptors and their ability to infuse their work with a living spirituality.
