Francis Newton SOUZA (1924-2002) - Lot 145
Francis Newton SOUZA (1924-2002) Head, 1961 (king) Oil on canvas signed and dated lower center. Height Height : 61 cm Width : 51 cm Kings, emperors and popes populated Souza's imagination, symbols of inherited, frozen and often oppressive power. In this work, only the weight of the crown distinguishes the royal subject - the facial features are deliberately effaced, the eyes strayed in opposite directions, suggesting the absurdity of disconnected power. In the background, stringy shapes, new to his style, replace cross-hatching, reflecting an evolution towards a freer, more organic language.
