Attributed to Jean DUCAYER (France - early 17th century) - Lot 436
Attributed to Jean DUCAYER (France - early 17th century) Presumed portraits of Marguerite de Lorraine and Eléonore de Gonzague Oil on canvas. Height 57 cm. Width : 42 cm. Restorations, refinishing. Note: Jean Ducayer, a court painter active in the early 17th century, was recently rediscovered thanks to an exhibition organized in 2022 at the Hôtel d'Agar in Cavaillon - the very first to be devoted to him. Probably trained in the entourage of François Clouet, Ducayer is renowned for his refined portraits of Parisian nobility, combining elegance, meticulous detail and idealized figures. His work bears witness to an art of portraiture rooted in the tradition of the French Renaissance, while heralding the stylistic evolutions of the reign of Louis XIII.
