KOTA, Obamba, Upper Ugoué region, Gabon - 19th century
Nbulu-ngulu figure, guardian of sacred relics. The oblong, slightly concave face is outlined by a cross motif. A median line runs from the top of the nose to the top of the forehead. The almond-shaped eyes, projected in relief, frame a simple nose also in relief, while the half-open mouth symbolically reveals the teeth. The mane-shaped sides frame the face, which is topped by a semi-circular, half-moon-shaped crest adorned with tiered registers of arched motifs. The neck, broad and massive, extends onto a diamond-shaped foot.
Wood partly covered with copper and brass, cut, studded, stapled and embossed with linear and dotted motifs. Old patina, marks of time.
