CHOKWE, Angola. - Lot 309
CHOKWE, Angola. Chief's stool resting on a circular pedestal and surmounted by the figure of a buffalo in naturalistic forms, flanked by two rectangular side pillars. Wood, metal, red fabric, old patina, wear marks. Dimensions: 33.5 × 8 cm Provenance: Alain de Monbrison gallery (a certificate from Mr. Alain de Monbrison will be given to the buyer). Chokwe chief's stools, produced for a refined court, were part of a set of commemorative and prestige objects (scepters, spears, snuffboxes, pipes), intended to exalt the religious and political power of the sovereign. These sculpted seats, with their wealth of forms and stylistic refinement, asserted their owner's authority. The presence of the buffalo, the animal of strength and fecundity, reinforced the symbolic dimension of the object and placed its use in the sphere of power.
