JAVA ISLAND, Indonesia, XIXᵉ century. - Lot 305
JAVA ISLAND, Indonesia, XIXᵉ century.
Extremely rare cult mask featuring a face with an intense expression, almond-shaped eyes stretched out, the forehead adorned with a crown of spiral cords and triangular motifs. He wears moustaches and his mouth is half-open. The pierced upper part indicates that this mask was intended for hanging, perhaps in a temple or dignitary's home.
Metal with the patina of time and use.
Height 18.8 cm
Width: 14.4 cm
This metal mask, probably from the XIXᵉ century or earlier, does not belong to a listed corpus of known Javanese masks. Its moustache and crown, however, link it to the figure of Kelana, the wrathful hero of local traditions. The perforation at the top of the mask suggests its use as a pendant, probably above a ritual table or in a dignitary's domestic space, in a protective function. A novel object, it stands out for its traces of age and bears witness to a singular desire to transpose the features of a heroic, tutelary face into metal.
