KANAK, New Caledonia, second half of the XIXᵉ century. - Lot 303
KANAK, New Caledonia, second half of the XIXᵉ century. Ceremonial and fighting club with mushroom head, the guard covered with carefully and meticulously crafted braiding. The upper part is adorned with engraved decoration. Hardwood, old shiny honey patina, vegetable fibers, a few small chips on the edge of the foreskin. Height Height : 79 cm Provenance: New York MARK EGLINGTON Among the Kanak, clubs were both formidable weapons and symbols of prestige. The "mushroom head" shape, characteristic of New Caledonia, was prized for its powerful impact but also for its formal elegance. The attention paid to the braiding of the guard and the engraved motifs reflects the ceremonial status of this example, which goes beyond its simple martial function. Worn at gatherings and exchanged as a valuable possession, the club embodied the authority of the chief and the continuity of the warrior and social tradition.
