CHOKWE, Democratic Republic of Congo. Tobacco box carved wit - Lot 231
CHOKWE, Democratic Republic of Congo. Tobacco box carved with mastery of a rider riding a gazelle and holding the animal by its horns Wood, old honey patina, use mark, cord (original lid) Height: 11 cm. 11 cm. This Ngoma tobacco tin is distinguished by the finesse of its carving: a rider in a position of mastery, firmly encamped on a gazelle and grasping its horns. This scene embodies an allegory of power, of domination over nature, but also of the mastery of vital forces. Carved in hardwood with a honey-colored patina, this work combines ritual use and social status.
