PAPUA - NEW GUINEA, AIRE MASSIM, Trobriand Islands - Lot 50
PAPUA - NEW GUINEA, AIRE MASSIM, Trobriand Islands Sculpted figurehead forming several stylized pelican heads, set in volutes evoking the flow of sea waves. The sculpture, slightly openwork, presents a fluid, dynamic composition, testifying to great formal mastery and a refined decorative sense. Wood, old patina and marks of time. Dimensions: 63 × 53 cm Provenance: Former Gilbert Lascault collection, Paris In the Massim area, figureheads (nagega) adorned the pirogues used for ritual trade expeditions, notably as part of the kula exchange system. These sculptures were often adorned with stylized motifs representing marine animals or birds, symbolizing protection and spiritual guidance during voyages. The pelican, in particular, is associated with wisdom and navigation, qualities essential to the region's navigators.
